Curriculum

From Knowing to Understanding to Application

At Gopal Sharma Memorial School, curriculum is understood as much more than a collection of textbooks and prescribed chapters. It represents the complete learning journey through which a child develops knowledge, understanding, skills, attitudes, values and the ability to apply learning in real situations. Our curriculum is designed around a progressive movement from knowing to understanding, application, analysis and creation. Academic knowledge provides the foundation, but learning does not end with knowing the correct answer. Students are progressively encouraged to investigate, experiment, question, communicate, collaborate, design and solve problems.

Mathematics therefore extends from calculation to mathematical reasoning and real-life problem-solving. Science progresses from definitions to observation, experimentation and scientific inquiry. Languages move beyond grammar towards reading, expression, conversation, presentation, debate and purposeful writing. Social Science connects history, geography, economics and civics with contemporary society and everyday experiences. Projects, laboratories, research assignments, field observations, art, music, sports, discussions and practical activities are integrated with classroom learning wherever educationally appropriate. The purpose is not simply to teach children what to think, but progressively to develop their ability to learn how to think.

Skill Based Learning

Because Knowledge Becomes Powerful When It Can Be Used

The world our children will enter is fundamentally different from the world for which traditional schooling was designed. Information is readily available, and artificial intelligence can retrieve, calculate, translate and generate information almost instantaneously. The distinguishing capabilities of future learners will increasingly include their ability to question information, analyse situations, communicate ideas, collaborate with others, solve unfamiliar problems and continuously acquire new knowledge.

Skill development at GSMS is therefore not treated as an isolated subject or occasional activity. It is integrated into academic learning. Children progressively develop competencies in communication, critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, problem-solving, research, decision-making, leadership, digital literacy, financial understanding, adaptability and self-management. A mathematical concept may lead to a budgeting exercise. A science chapter may become an investigation. A Social Science topic may lead students into a community survey.

Language learning may culminate in an interview, presentation or debate. Environmental studies may involve field observations and data collection. This approach converts the classroom from a place where children primarily receive information into an environment where they increasingly use information.

Learning by Doing

Experiential learning occupies an important place in this process. Students may build structures, grow plants, conduct experiments, investigate commodities, measure physical spaces, analyse advertisements, undertake surveys, interview people, observe markets, interpret data or present their conclusions. When children build, measure, experiment, observe, fail, modify and attempt again, abstract concepts begin acquiring real meaning. Failure, in this environment, is not necessarily the opposite of learning; sometimes it is where learning begins.

LEARNERS AGED: 2.5 – 6 YEARS

At GSMS School, we believe that the early years are the foundation of lifelong learning. Our child-centred, activity-based approach provides a safe, joyful, and stimulating environment.
